The information on this website is general educational content, written by a postpartum doula to help families understand confinement meals and postpartum recovery. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified health professional.

Not a doctor or dietitian

Julia is a Canada-registered postpartum doula. A doula provides practical, nutritional and emotional support during the postpartum period. She is not a physician, midwife, nurse, or registered dietitian, and nothing on this site should be read as diagnosis, treatment, or a prescription.

Every pregnancy, birth, and recovery is different. Before you act on anything you read here — especially regarding what to eat, herbal foods, breastfeeding, medication, or recovery after a caesarean or a complicated birth — please speak with your own doctor, midwife, or a registered dietitian.

Traditional practices

We describe traditional Chinese confinement practices and food-as-tonic (食補) ideas because they are an important part of many families’ culture and this guide would be incomplete without them. We present them as cultural tradition, not as proven medical fact. Where a tradition and current health evidence point in different directions, we try to say so plainly. Traditional herbs and tonics can interact with medications or health conditions; check with a qualified practitioner before using them.

Allergies and individual needs

Recipes and meal suggestions may not suit every person. If you have allergies, dietary restrictions, gestational diabetes, or any medical condition, adapt accordingly and consult a professional.

In an emergency

If you or your baby are unwell or you are worried about a symptom, contact your care provider. In a medical emergency in Canada, call 911. For non-urgent health questions in British Columbia, you can call 8-1-1 (HealthLink BC).

No professional relationship

Reading this website does not create a doula–client or any other professional relationship. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Julia’s Kitchen is not liable for any loss or harm arising from reliance on the information here.
